High over Mt. Baldy

San Gabriel Mountains, LA basin & Catalina Island (Winter 2013)
My son took this photo with his iPhone during his soaring flight over Mt. Baldy (and "enhanced" it a bit.)

Activity at Minarets Lookout - Eastern Sierra Nevada

Two weekends ago, at Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. I liked seeing the various interests of the group of visitors - looking at the mountain peaks, reading signs, and tapping rocks.

Fly Fishing (Eastern Sierra Nevada)

A couple of weekends ago, our son was fishing the Convict Stream.
Tomorrow is school registration for the new school year and classes start on August 30th.
I know which he would rather be doing... how about you?

On a clear day, one can see for miles. This one was actually taken last year on January 3rd.

Clear with Snowy Peaks

The best views of the Los Angeles basin are after the rain...as seen earlier today. The highest peak is Mt. Baldy, part of the San Gabriel Mountain range.

More parental care...Red-Breasted Sapsucker

Spyrapicus ruber and offspring, 18 July 2010
We couldn't tell if this was a mom or a dad. The youngster would raise a ruckus when he thought the parent with food was nearby. The trees were just in front of the cabins at the Convict Lake Resort.
(Convict Lake got its name from a group of escaped convicts who were captured in the canyon in 1871. Read all about it HERE.)

Flight to Mt. Baldy

Photos taken by my son (with his Palm Pre cell phone) from his solo flight in a sailplane (i.e. glider) along the San Gabriel Mountains a couple of weekends ago. The first photo is of Mt. Baldy, with the clouds over the LA basin. He started with a tow from Crystalaire in Llano (SoCal Soaring Academy) and then found lift that took him higher and farther.

Peaks in Palos Verdes (Skywatch)

Palos Verdes Golf Course - County Club is one of the earliest buildings in PV. Last week was the 1st time I realized that Mt. Baldy can be seen from Via Campesina street skirting the south side of the golf course.

At Crystalaire

White on white - my son is flying solo in the Puchacz, a versitile Polish two-seater sailplane.
Glider pilots and instructors from the Southern California Soaring Academy, Llano, CA.
Amy with a new friend, AD.
(AD showed up at the field one day, looking very scrawny, and with a hurt leg, probably from a fight with a coyote. He's found a good home and is looking really well.)

Clearing between the Rains

LA Basin, 20 Jan 2010
In between the rain storms, the city really sparkles. Downtown Los Angeles is right under the knoby tree branch. Both views are taken from a walkway on the left side of Rolling Hills Seventh Day Adventist church on, the aptly named, Highridge Road.
LA Basin & Mountains, 4 January 2010
Old Mt. Baldy with a bit of snow is the right most peak, and just left of the left tree trunk is Downtown Los Angeles. The panorama is a PS3 Photomerge from 2 photos.
