Two Steeples of St. Francis Episcopal (SkyWatch Friday)

Steeples of Chapel and Church, St. Francis Episcopal
Palos Verdes Estates

St. Francis Episcopal -- 1930's Chapel and 1960's Church
Palos Verdes Estates

My husband's family attended St. Francis in the 50's and 60's as my mother-in-law was an traditional Episcopalian. I've gone to services at the chapel (designed by Walter Swindell Davis) -- while it is gorgeous on the outside it has a bit of a closed-in feeling on the inside. I have yet to go in the more modern church that I'm sure is lovely inside as the walls are all modern stained glass.

Night Work at LA Port

The Docks in San Pedro, 12 March 2012
For the last night photo class, we went to San Pedro. The tranquil scene does not relay the on-going loud noise that goes with loading a container ship.

Reflection in Long Beach, CA

On Ocean Blvd. (25 July 2011) - Photo "Textured" in PhotoShop
I've been on a prowl of two antique malls in Long Beach --- and I scored big!
A numbered print of "Island Girl" by Millard Sheets, a "Gravure originale de JOHNNY FRIEDLAENDER" (a small abstract 5-color etching - 1968 New Year's card for Madame R.G. Michel of the gallery on 17, quai Saint-Michel, Paris), and a beautiful color pencil drawings of a barn by Pigeon River, Tenneesee by Liam ?.
Photos will follow as soon as I am able to take decent ones.

The Docks

Port of Los Angeles with San Pedro & Palos Verdes in the background (from Vincent Thomas Bridge) -- 6 June 2010
I've been slacking off lately... trying to get the blog-life balance sorted out...

Storm Surf in the South Bay

View from Esplanade at Avenue I (18 March 2012)
Sunday was very windy and cold (by LA standards) and made for great coastal views.
My lesson of the day was not related to how to take photos on a windy day
but on checking the camera setting BEFORE snapping away. The ISO was set at 3200 for this picture. :(

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Mickey Holton's CITABRIA at Torrance Airport (May 2008)
... with a bit of fancy green and a shamrock too.
(The photo is from my archives from when our son first
started flight lessons with Mickey.)

Casa del Portal at Malaga Cove Plaza

Timeless beauty, Spring 2012
Every spring I just have to take a few photos of this beautiful building constructed in 1929.

The 787 is a tour of Boeing sites. Today, the awesome new airplane arrived at Long Beach for a 2-day stay. Addendum: Photo of the C-17 ("my airplane") and  Boeing 787 together in Long Beach.

Sunday's Sunset

On my way home on PV Drive South from my friend's in San Pedro, I had one of those photo-op panic moments, "I GOTTA PULL OVER somewhere, before the sun disappears!!!"
Luckly, I was able to block the driveway right after a PV Drive East, and get out to watch the sun go down.
The photo is straight from the camera and captures the sky and sun color, but I'd have to fiddle with it to get the foreground and the cloudbank right.

Mastering the Skies (SkyWatch Friday)

Ian with his flight instructor, Mickey Holton, and the Citabria taildragger (3 March 2012)
Last Saturday, after a long oral exam and practical flight test, Ian received his private pilot power license at 17 years and 3 months. We are so proud of his accomplishment.
(This is a good time to ask him for a scenic flight in the area...
Ian can fly but he cannot charge.)
Go to Skywatch Friday for some really cool sky pics.

8th of March -- International Women's Day & Annie's Birthday

Ladies' Club Lunch, Palos Verdes Country Club, early '60s
TRI-PHOTO by TRIANGLE CAMERA, Redondo Beach, CA
Lots of rememberances on this day. The photo is of my mother-in-law lunching with her friends at the PVCC. She is sitting on the right, in the middle. I adored my mother-in-law who passed away 13 years ago. She was a homemaker, a seamstress, a golfer, and a bridge player among many other things, and was just wonderful to me.
My dearest friend's birthday is also today. I met Annie in Junior High, when we were both fresh off the boat - I from former Yugoslavia, and she from Taiwan. It's been a long and strong friendship ever since. Happy Birthday dear Annie! Annie and Karl had their wedding reception at PVCC in 1985.
As for Women's Day, when I was growing up in Yugoslavia, it was a day to honor women and mothers in our lives. I remember buying fresh bunches of violets and a pretty perfume bottle (all on my own) for my mom when I was 10, as well as small gifts for my favorite teachers.

Bright Lights (from Manhattan Beach Pier)

El Segundo Power Generating Station, 5 March 2012
Night photo class shot - straight from the camera. I'm finding that
focusing is the hardest thing about night photography.
This one is for "Bibi" of Yankee-in-Belgrade.

"H" is for Heads, Hats, Handbags in Hermosa Beach (ABC Wednesday)

Spotted last night, in a vintage clothing store window, on the drive home from my night photo class.
Post inspired by Yankee in Belgrade (only "Bibi" posted real people!)

South Bay Watch ...

From the streets of Rancho Palos Verdes  (3 March 2012)
We had exceptionally good weather this past weekend in the LA basin --
beautiful views abounded.
The photo shows a bit of a garage sale in progress. I couldn't resist stopping
and while I was pondering buying 2 wooden carved cats (for a friend, really),
someone else snached them up.

Tucked away by PV Art Center, quietly working away to keep PV powered up.
