"It never rains in California" ...

Powell & Hyde St. Cable Car Station, San Fransico (7 February 2014)
Today, we are getting some much needed rain in LA area. The photo is from a recent, very rainy weekend in San Francisco.

Need for Speed ...

... brought to you by the South Bay Harley Davidson club, a "hog" zipping by on Hawthorne Blvd.

The computer game of the same name was the first one my son got hooked on when he was 5 years old. I would play endless games against him and I'd ALWAYS lose. I know he doesn't have the "need for speed" now, since his car will be a '68 Karman Ghia when he gets his lisence in less than a month.

November Theme Day: Public Transportation

At first, I was going to post a blank page...as everyone knows, public transportation is an oxymoron for the LA area. But we do have regular bus service linking PV to the LA basin, and my son used it once in a while to get to Torrance or friend's house in PV. The 344 goes to Artesia Transit Center, a hub for other destinations such as Downtown LA.
I took the photo thru the windshield of my private transportation, a very reliable 10-year-old, 210,000 miles on the odometer, Honda Accord.
The 1st of the month is Theme Day at the City Daily Photo community of blogs:

Getting Our Phil ... (Weekend Reflections)

LA Metro Bus with "Phil" advertising, going down Hathorne Blvd.
... LA Phil or Dr. Phil --- which would you pick? The new 29-year-old music director Gustavo Dudamel (born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela) seems very dynamic and must be fun to watch, as well as being an excellent conductor.

Heavy Load

I watched these youngsters heading for school this morning as I waited for an office to open. Even before classes started, they seemed to be carrying a heavy load.

Angel's Gate Lighthouse

The photo was taken from the farthest end of the fishing pier that parallels the LA harbor breakwater, starting at Cabrillo Beach. My City Daily Photo neighbor, Lori Lynn, has been posting port activity, including the breakwater in San Pedro Daily Photo.
More information on the lighthouse can be found at Light House Friends - Angel's Gate.

'O' is for Ocean (abc Wednesday)

Cruise ship departing on an ocean journey (most likely for Baja California) from Port of LA on a recent Saturday afternoon. The view is from Mantis Street in San Pedro. The little tower at the tip of breakwater on the right side is the Angel's Gate Lighthouse.
Although I have not visited Baja California, I've seen many beautiful photographs of its rugged beauty. One of my favorite travel books is The Log from The Sea of Cortez by the American novelist John Steinbeck, where in 1940 he sailed in a sardine boat with his great friend, the biologist Edward F. Ricketts. to collect marine invertebrates from the beaches of the Gulf of California. Another good read was LA Times columnist Jack Smith's God and Mr. Gomez (1974), where he wrote about building a vacation house in Baja California on the Pacific Coast side.

444 RANCHO & 444 PALOS VERDES (Scavenger Hunt: Numbers)

I chased this bus (it's the same one) up Hawthorne Blvd. from Walteria neighborhood in Torrance to where Hawthorne peaks in Rancho Palos Verdes. The 444 line starts at Downtown LA's transit center by Union Station and ends at the coast on PV Dr. W & Seacove. The trip will take from 1 1/2 hrs in the very early morning to 2 hrs at noon. (LA-Metro-444 schedule.)
Notice the clever quick-fix for the windshield wipers problem with the ever-versatile handkerchief.

Thank you, Carrie at View of You Photography for hosting the Scavenger Hunt.
