Getting Our Phil ... (Weekend Reflections)

LA Metro Bus with "Phil" advertising, going down Hathorne Blvd.
... LA Phil or Dr. Phil --- which would you pick? The new 29-year-old music director Gustavo Dudamel (born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela) seems very dynamic and must be fun to watch, as well as being an excellent conductor.

LA Phil! I've seen Dudamel several times. I get a small subscription to the Phil every year. Dudamel is quite fun to watch. He sometimes seems to dance as he conducts. Another thing he does is at the end of a performance, instead of just asking the musicians to stand up, he goes back into their ranks and hugs some of them and stands with they arm-in-arm as they take their bows. I think the musicians really love him.

LA Phil, definitely. We have an offshoot of the Venezualan 'El Sistema' in Scotland now, called 'The Big Noise'. It's doing great things with kids in a deprived community.
