Frolicking in Lake Mary - Mammoth Lakes, CA

We headed for Mammoth this weekend ... Amy had a cooling dip in chilly water of Lake Mary and made a few new friends.

Winter at Lake Mary (Away from Home)

Convict Lake Store

Camping out at Convict Lake is not really "roughing it" - for treats or any forgotten items, there is always the store. Adjacent to the store are cabins that are very popular with the fishing crowd.

At Mono Lake Visitor's Center

I remember the "Save Mono Lake" bumper stickers from the '70s, when the water coming into the lake was being diverted to LA. I believe the lake is in a 'stable' condition now. It's a very popular spot for photographers, and usually it is best at dawn and dusk for picture taking. The visitors add a bit of interest to this mid-morning shot. Mono Lake is on of favorite shooting spots for nature photographer George Lepp.

One more of Lake Mary, this time looking a bit more east northeast - it's a view I could look at all day.

Lake Mary is a really pretty Alpine lake with a view of the back side of Mammoth Mountain - fun for boating, fishing both by the shore and on the lake, and for a game of swim & fetch (for our dog).

Several people asked if the lake in yesterday's post was a home to an alligator a few years back - and yes, it was.

The True Story of Reggie
Reggie, the alligator, was first seen swimming in Machado Lake at Kenneth Malloy Memorial Park (or Harbor Park) in August 2005. He eluded elaborate efforts to capture him and was sighted again in April 2007. In May 2007, Reggie stepped out on dry land and “a zoo employee, jumped on his back, threw a t-shirt over his head, and wrapped duct tape around his snout. He was seven feet long at the time of his capture.” Reggie was moved to Los Angeles Zoo, where in August 2007, he again briefly escaped from his cage. Wikipedia on Reggie, the alligator

Paysage of Machado Lake in Harbor Park (SkyWatch Friday)

Harbor Park is located at Vermont and Anaheim St. in City of Wilmington, adjacent to Palos Verdes. the lake is a bit lower than the road and surrounded by trees, so it cannot be seen from the road and is well worth a short walk to the water. While in college, I spent a Saturday on the lake, practicing canoeing before a trip down a calm section of the Colorado River.
