Spring in Yellow Springs, Ohio

Is a bird caught on "film" worth two on a tree?
Yellow Springs, Ohio  (11 April 2012)

Sam & Eddie's was NOT OPEN...
but the excellent DARK STAR (used) BOOKS & COMICS across the street was.
I came away with 4 comics and 3 books: 1921 edition on historical quilts, a 1919 Zane Gray western, and modern art book from the early 1930's. And from Village Artisians Co-op, I purchased a vibrant mountain & field watercolor by Sue Brezine.

Purdy Birdy ...

... was strolling (with owner) on Cherry Ave. in Long Beach and had me screech to a halt, park and run after them.
In my haste, I didn't get the name of either one of them, but the bird proved to be a sensational showman. The young man said that hundreds of people have photographed his buddy.

Will pose for food

Luckily, the fish was provided by the boat captains who were in line to hoist their boats out of the water at Cabrillo Beach boat launching spot in San Pedro.

Saturday Afternoon on Bird Rock

The rocks are just south of Pt. Vicente. That afternoon, a pelican and a black bird with dashing white side tufts shared the rock and both gazed west.

Theme Day: Photo of the Year 2010

My best photo of the year is one I didn't post in 2010. It was taken on a walk along the Palos Verdes cliffs north of Long Point on 13th of March.

"Spirit of America" over the Plush Pony... (SkyWatch Friday)

A combo of old and new, grounded and aloft, alive and animated.
"Spirit of America" is the name of the Good Year blimp which is based in Carson, CA.
The sign is for the Palos Verdes Inn which used to be The Plush Pony in the 50's and 60's. It is not located in Palos Verdes but just adjacent to it in Redondo Beach.
The old style antennas are becoming obsolete, but the ubiquitous pigeons are going strong in the area.

More parental care...Red-Breasted Sapsucker

Spyrapicus ruber and offspring, 18 July 2010
We couldn't tell if this was a mom or a dad. The youngster would raise a ruckus when he thought the parent with food was nearby. The trees were just in front of the cabins at the Convict Lake Resort.
(Convict Lake got its name from a group of escaped convicts who were captured in the canyon in 1871. Read all about it HERE.)

Los Angeles Skyline from Altadena & ...

I drove up as high as I could into the hills of Altadena and saw this view, looking at LA and beyond to Palos Verdes. And then as I stepped back, the real visual treat came into view, right above me.

SkyWatch with Pelican

Taken while walking up from Pt. Vicente fishing cove, a rocky beach between Rocky Point (home of the Terranea Resort) and Point Vicente (home of the lighthouse), seen previously HERE.
Yes, I did lean back (past the comfortable point) to get this shot.

'K' is for Kennicottii Kid

Taken not in PV, but at The Living Desert Wildlife and Botanical Park in Palm Dessert, CA - this kid-owl was sitting on the volunteer's gloved hand and observing us. He looks like he was putting up with us and waiting to go back to his nap.

"The Western Screech Owl is a small, nocturnal, woodland Owl of western North America and is one of the west's more common Owls at lower elevations. The species name "kennicotti," was created to honour Robert Kennicott, an American explorer and naturalist (1835-1866). Originally, this bird was officially called 'Kennicott's Owl'. " [Ref.
