'P' is for Puzzled Pigeon Pondering in a Pool...

... and thinking, "Are you looking at me? Are you?"
The location is away from Palos Verdes in the Maguire Gardens of the Los Angeles Central Library. The inquisitive pigeon is standing on "a skeleton of a Labyrinthodont, a representative of the first "fish" to develop both feet and lungs, i.e., the first amphibians. (Spine, p. 101)", an art work by the sculptor and creator, Jud Fine. Jud developed the sculptures in the garden around the spine theme - with the spine being the backbone of a book also. I had the luck of having Jud as a professor at USC for a sculpture class in the late '70s. He is the head of the sculpture department there now.

At first I thought he was standing on an alligator skeleton! That picture is so cute. You caught the bird's silhouette in his reflection perfectly!

That was some meal for one pigeon. Maybe that's why he has that skeptical look - where did I put it all? - Margy

USC has a great art department. Fellow by the name of David Bunn teaches there (or at least he used to) He did the library catalogue cards in the Library elevator shafts. I love that piece.

Ha! This is great. I have the impression that the pigeon has just enjoyed a super meal, and picked the carcass clean...

Tash, you totally charmed that pigeon. What a pleasure it must be to be connected to that sculpture through the artist.

ROFL! That photo made me laugh out loud, and OH came to see what I was looking at. He gazed at it for some seconds and then said 'I don't understand ... '

Bless him. Hasn't he ever seen a pigeon sitting on a dinosaur skull in a pool before?

O this is so amusing - thanks for the laugh.

Perhaps the pigeon's a bit nervous at the thought of those jaws. When you consider the size of a pigeon's brain it's not surprising that they often look puzzled.

Fascinating sculpture story.
