Two Saturdays ago was the last of this season's Music at the Library series, arranged by the talented young librarian, Ashley Burdick. This time, her brother James gave a wonderful concert of solo guitar pieces and delighted the audiance with the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo, accompanied by the accomplished pianist Albert Mendoza. About the guitarist: James Burdick is a young Southern California classical guitarist, who began his formal studies at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. Since then, James has performed in a number of exciting venues, including the “Guitar Nights” series at the South Pasadena Public Library, and a private concert under the auspices of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra.

The first image is really a great portrait of a player, the second a nice one after the concert: they are so young!
I find it so interesting to contrast the styles of classical guitarists to the rock variety.
Interesting - especially to me as a 40-something late in life student of classical guitar. California seems such a hotbed of great guitarists. I'm learning by the Suzuki method, and one of the foremost teachers internationally in the method, Frank Longay, has his studio in Santa Clara. We saw a concert by his students at the world convention in Turin a couple of years ago, and they were superb.
I looked up James Burdick's webpage and was so impressed to see that his guitar studies are an adjunct to his major in mechanical engineering. Talented young man indeed!
