Catching it at Cabrillo Beach Pier - San Pedro, CA

The shadows tell who has the goods.
Shovelnose guitarfish -Identification: the nose is long and pointed and the disk is longer than it is wide. The tail is long and thin. Color is sandy brown above, white below. (They also have the “most soulful, woebegone eyes you have ever seen.” quote from Probably More Than You Want To Know About The Fishes Of The Pacific Coast by the eminent marine biologist Dr. Robin Milton Love).

And the sad story is that most of what is caught should not be eaten.

Oh, I would throw back a fish with "soulful, woebegone eyes..."

Never heard of this one.

Even sadder is most of us don't know how we're killing our oceans & its life each day.

Cafe Pasedena made an excellent point. Great photography especially those birds.

Awww, the poor fishies!

Why is it "that most of what is caught should not be eaten"? It is the fish themselves that are inedible, or has junk in the water made them so?

I like the photos of the seagulls and their shadows.

I know that scene well. I spent many childhood days on the Redondo Bch pier at King Harbor and graduated So Torrance High in 1963 I will always have such fondness for P.V and the South Bay but I wish the guy would have thrown the shark back.

Poor guitar fish. Why the "should not be eaten"? Is the water so polluted?

Sounds like the fish caught in the Manila Bay. Unfortunately, the poor who fish there don't really have much of a choice :(

I liked the shadows of the gulls. I also enjoyed catching up on your photos! Excellent as always.

I hope the poor guitarfish was thrown back in the water...
The 'should not be eaten' thing is clearly explained (in two languages) in the third image.

What a sad commentary that the fish can't be eaten. Makes me wonder what the point of the 'sport' of catching it is.

Feeling bad for the Sand Shark with the soulful eyes. On the other hand I'm enjoying the cranky birds

I think that gull snagged himself a hot dog bun!

These shots are really great. While in the Huntington Beach pier in January we watched a guy reel in (what I've always called) a sand shark and it took quite a bit of explaining to him that everyone throws them back and that he didn't want to take it home, as his kids were begging him to do. I remember being scared to death by one of these during a scuba diving class when I was swimming along the bottom and one started flapping between my stomach and the sandy bottom. Powerful little swimmers when startled! :-) I'm glad to learn their real name from your post!
