Controlled Burn (Skywatch)

A refinery in Torrance, LA basin and San Gabriel Mountains as viewed from top of Palos Verdes. I saw the flame on my drive home...it looked alarmingly large but it was thankfully a routine burnoff from the refinery.

Nice capture Tash! That would be scary if you didn't know what it was.

Kind of disturbing that a smoke spewing fire like this is considered routine...

Always good to know when a fire is a controled one.

Lovely shot.

They must have a permit to do that. I wonder about the contribution of such a burn-off to smog in the area.

That would be a scary scene to see flame from the refinery. Otherwise, looks like a nice day in SoCal. Have a great weekend.

I've driven by the refinery when it's letting off seam/oil/soot. Pretty dramatic

It does look alarming with so much habitation around. Wouldn't want to be downwind of that.

«Louis» et Mme la Vache live near the Chevron refinery in Richmond, so we've seen those burn-offs. They are dramatic!

That reminds me of the night Wayne and I went flying while there was rioting downtown LA. There were lots of fires and smoke trails in the sky. I know people get angry, but it didn't make sense to destroy where you lived. - Margy

Amazing that they are allowed to simply let the smoke escape into the air!
