'H' is for Helicopter Handling Hobby

Another kind of bird for today - a model whirlybird being flown by an expert handler from a pad next to the Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall. While we watched, the 'pilot' had the heli do loops and make fast turns.

The helicopter launch pad is part of Point Vicente Park, located on a 71 acre former Nike missile launch site and was officially receivd from the Federal Dept. of Interior and formally dedicated by the city of RPV on 2-24-79. The site has been put to all around good use as it holds the city maintenance yard and the modest administrative building is used by a RVP City Hall.

At first I saw a helicopter in trouble and a bystander.
After reading the post I know better, but still think that the picture is... misleading, obviously in a nice and studied way: very good shot!

Hey, did you play with the perspective? How can it look so big?

I have sort of funny (depending on your point of view) story about a model helicopter. Wayne was Department Chair of the Mt SAC Aeronautics Department. We got to know a lot of great students. One of them loved models and invited us over to see his helicopter. It lifter off fine, but there was a problem with the controls. The next thing we know it was flying straight for us. After an instant of panic we jumped aside only to watch the wonderful model crash (at least it didn't burn). It was a sad day for the model owner but a very memorable experience for us bystanders. - Margy

What gorgeous colors in that photograph, especially that lush green showing up against varied blues! I think that radio guided models are fascinating. How fortunate the handler is to have such an appropriate place to fly his helicopter.

Great shot! It reminds me of my childhood when we used to camp on the dry lakes in AZ. I'd wake up in the morning to the sound of my dad flying his model airplanes.

I keep moving into neighborhoods where helicopters are a bit uncomfortably constant

At first I thought it was full size heliocopter. Great capture of the man's stance as he controls it.

Men and their toys! You've done a wonderful job of backlighting this. I recently ordered Kelby's books. I can't wait to gobble them up.

I've always wanted to try one of these, but it would probably end up the way it did in the comment by Powell River Books.

Congratulations on the recent article! A well deserved honor for you and recognition of your photoblog.
