Mural Monday: A Horse (of course) --- detail from Piazzoni's "The Land" mural at de Young in San Francisco

Gottardo F.P. Piazzoni (1872-1945)
The Land, 1932 (oil on canvas)
The Land is one of two panoramic five-panel mural suites (the other is The Sea) "created for a loggia at the top of the grand staircase in the main building of San Francisco's Public Library, The paintings, which were intergrated into the architecture of the Beaux-Arts building, were intended to suggest vistas seen through the columns of a terrace." These now reside in the Piazzoni mural room at the de Young fine art museum in San Francisco. The room is lovely and the museum hosts various events in this space.

A-MAZE-ing Coloring (at The Getty)

I spotted the lovely new blooms in the Getty gardens just at closing time.
I think this view deserves to be re-visited very soon.

"The House That Sam Built: Sam Maloof and Art in the Pomona Valley, 1945-1985" Pacific Standard Time

The exhibit at the Huntington Library's Boone Gallery "showcases classic examples
of the work of Sam Maloof (1916-2009), a nationally recognized leader of the
American studio craft movement -- a movement that favored
the aesthetics of the handmade over the machine and mass-produced."

The exhibit is extremely well done and Maloof pieces are very appealing.
The style has been popularized and mass-produced but those
pieces do not come close to the beauty of the handcrafted originals.

For you locals, the exhibit runs through tomorrow, so you can still rush out to see it.
Watercolors by Maloof and others, memorabilia, and even a painting by Millard Sheets is also on display.

Variety (is the spice of life)...

BROAD CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM -- LACMA -- 15 January 2012
Canon EOS 50D, f/4, 1/30 sec., ISO-800, 18 mm focal length
...not much variety, only a variation on the night theme with this one. The photo came out pretty good for a hand-held shot.

PACIFIC STANDARD TIME - Fall Back

Today we set our clocks back to Pacific Standard Time.
But this Pacific Standard Time refers to the initiative of the Getty, with participation of arts institutions across Southern California, to celebrate the LA art scene from 1945 to 1980.
By April, I plan to see all the exhibits in the museums and catch at least a few at the participating galleries...even though photographing the art is not allowed.

A Day at LACMA: Orange you ready...

... to see what's around the corner?
Actually, I quite enjoyed viewing this piece...and how people reacted to it.

I Can See for Miles - PV from The Getty Center

I had an hour to spare today between appointments in Westwood and spent it rushing around the marvellous Getty Center. Makes me wonder why I don't visit it more often. LA is having another heat wave with some smog being pushed out toward the ocean by the warm Santa Ana winds. In the distance, the Palos Verdes peninsula is the darker hill on the right left, and farther left right is Catalina Island. (Thank you Petrea & Bratcat for knowing the peninsula vs. island. :)
The Getty was built using Italian travetine with the facades alternating between the rough natural look and smooth polished surfaces.

'Q' is for Quadrangle (abc Wednesday)

quad·ran·gle n. 1. Mathematics Quadrilateral. 2. A rectangular area surrounded on all four sides by buildings.
Untitled, 1992 by Matt Mullican (1 May 2010)
"Commisioned by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women's Board, this large-scale, contemporary art installation by Mullican represents a complex array of signs, symbols, and patterns. Incorporated into the Museum's architecture, its centerpiece is two oversized canvas rubbings (acrylic and oil pencil) that are mounted, facing one another, in a light-filled atrium. Painted in black and the primary colors red and yellow, each panel is divided into two halves: the top portions present a constellation of symbols, many based upon international sign language, while the bottom parts refer to Santa Barbara, identified by its city grid and by images of its recognizable landscape."

Yellow Mimosa (or Can't Fence In Springtime)

I'm taking a guess that these lovely, delicate, puffs of yellow are mimosa tree flowers.

On a different note, check out the museum pieces (living/singing art and Millard Sheet's work) on Pasadena Adjacent's: U-Can-See-Um-In-A-Museum.

Real/Fake at Getty Villa (2 things challenge)

I first thought I'd post a real vs. fake sculpture - but the museum visitors were just so "real", and the building, since it's a replica, can be considered "fake".
