Marineland of the Pacific (1954 - 1987)

"Marineland of the Pacific was a public aquarium and tourist attraction located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast above the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles County, California, USA that opened in 1954. Millions of people visited Marineland before it closed in 1987." (Ref. palosverdes.com/rpv/marineland) The link has lots of old photos of Marineland. The property stood idle for a long time and now is being turned into an architecturally uninspired resort.

Shown is a detail from the original Marineland sign that is now located by Pt. Vicente Interpretive Center. The Center has more memorabilia including a Marineland Memories book. Most people who lived in the area during those years have fond memories of their visits.

I remember going there in early spring of 1971, with my best friend in 7th grade, Marina Beccera (sitting). I recall a very long drive from Northeast LA and much cooler weather by the ocean. I also thought it strange to have dolphins and whales perform for us. Do you have memories of Marineland or other similar attractions?

You really haven't changed; just the hair. And the knee socks.

I remember visiting Marine Land, but must not have left much of an impression. Maybe I remember the dolphins jumping for fish, or maybe I just remember a photo.

I remember going in 1972 or 73 with my mother and grandmother. After a about an hour my grandmother stated complaining about the light drizzle so we had to go home to Orange County. I was 5 or 6 yrs old and cried, but was assured we would go back in better weather. I'm still waiting. I also wanted to go to the pike but never made it there either. :-(
I did get to go on a Helicopter ride over Ports O’ Call Village in 1974.

Sorry about the place, you still keep the tickets! Quite elegant in knee socks and your friend is clearly, by name, of italian heritage.
Very nice post, you gave me ideas...

I love that picture of you so much! YOu are rocking those knee socks, Tash. :-)

I never saw Marineland. But I had a coat almost exactly like yours when I was in the 7th grade.

So that's you! Our fashions were so similar--

I have great memories of Marineland---it's one of the first places I visited when we moved to California in 1962.

I remember Marineland! It was amazing and before Sea World. Thanks for your comments on my site about Chihuly. I have a few more days of the Frank Lloyd Wright series and then and then I will move on to different Chihuly, cactus and desert photos. I was in Morocco for the past two weeks so I apologize for the delay in responding. Morocco was very interesting and, surprisingly, very French. A very different experience than Egypt or Jordan. It was a quite enjoyable trip. I will spend the next week catching up on everyone's websites and enjoying their photos.

Yes. 1981. I just moved to SoCal (Simi Valley) and went there with my boyfriend. Little did I know many years later, this is where I would live.

I remember the dolphin in a little round tank, and it did not look too healthy :(

I barely recall Marineland of the Pacific, on the coast.
My 1st thought was, you really haven't changed much at all. Then, the 1st comment is exactly that from KB!!

Long hair, parted down the middle, definitely the early 70s. Bet Marina was a little jealous of that. Are you two still friends? Did you have a dress code at your school where you had to wear dresses to go to an amusement park? This is a really fun post.

I got married down there, before they turned it into a upscale timeshare! But I never did make it to Marine Land. Which kid is y ou in the photo?

Also, do you want to do the blogger meetup this summer?

I've never been to Marineland of the Pacific, but I have many memories of Marineland of Florida! We went there on school field trips every single year when I was growing up. It kind of got overshadowed by DisneyWorld and SeaWorld, but it's still there: www.marineland.net

Like Altadenahiker, I know I visited there many years ago but don't really have any memories of it.

I'm back in Cali visiting some sites of my childhood and we drove through Palos Verdes today. I visited Marineland several times as a child, growing up in Santa Monica, but the last time I visited was the day that one of the whales broke the glass and the park flooded and we had to leave. I can't seem to find any info on that day or which whale it was. Ah well, you brought back memories for me. Blessings, Shay

Great post and photos! I've been researching Marineland since finding a handful of postcards at a yard sale this summer. Sad that it is no longer there for us to enjoy but I love reading about it and viewing the vintage photos online.

From Pasadena Adjacent...comment from April 2009---

This is my favorite post of yours. Love love love it!

I do have memories... surprise surprise! I went with a ROP (Regional Occupation Program) class I was taking on small animal lab technology. It was held in a building at Cal Tech. Disturbing was the basement of "said" building. They were doing all sorts of animal experiments (monkeys, cats, dogs) at the time 1977? Our class loaded up in a yellow school bus and headed to Marineland.

This included an introduction to a seal who was suffering from PDST brought on by Charro and her cuchi-cuchi coo stick
