GTE in PV (but no more)

Up Highridge Road, an unusual sight for this neighborhood could be seen tucked away from the street - a delapidated building. The photo was taken last December and today when I drove by, I noticed that the building is no longer there.

It belonged to "GTE Corporation (formerly General Telephone & Electronics Corporation) that was the largest of the "independent" US telephone companies (providing local telephone service) during the days of the Bell System." (Ref. Wikipedia). GTE was acquired by Verizon in the late '90s.

I do like the rusty wire netting, Tash. Rust is such an intruiging "growth".

Time changes so many things and not always for the better. Cities grow bigger, buildings get taller, homes get grander. Things get torn down to make way for "progress". And in the process so much is lost, like the charm and ambiance of small towns, cozy neighborhoods and quaint little cottages. Anna

Be fascinating to document what rises in its place.

Like the peeping through aspect. Always adds nostalgic feel somehow.

Hard to believe the little building could be all that was needed for telephone switching equipment, but I guess "back then" there weren't as many phones and connections needed. - Margy

Glad to hear it's not there anymore. But I'm glad you told me about it. Very interesting.

Do you know what's going to take its place? Is land for building in such demand that run-down/abandoned buildings get demolished, or is it a case of civic pride? Questions, questions!

Not a great loss, I see. I have to use this through-the-netting idea, it is a creative way to frame this building. Too many of these around here, and nobody is goig to tear them down...

Not the best architecture but I hate to see old things destroyed....

That makes me so sad. It kind of looks like the remains from the army base in Pedro
