The Little Spanish House

This is the first house my in-laws lived in. They bought it in 1946, when Palos Verdes was way in the boonies and when homes were affordable for a young couple starting a family with one income (in addition to the mansions for the wealthy.) The house was sold when my husband was two, and the family moved next door into a much larger home they had build. I noticed that a family with young children lives there now. They are taking good care of the little old Spanish house.

Bowers Residence, 4017 Via Largavist, Valmonte, PV Estates, 1931 (Curtesy of Palos Verdes Library - Local History)
You can imagine my delight when I found a photo of the house in the PV Library Local History photo collection. The description is as follows: "Image shows view of the Edward K. and Stella Bowers residence, located on Via Largavista on lot 16, block 6311, tract 7143, in Valmonte. View shows front of the single-story, five-room stucco house with chimney and tile roof. Lush landscaping visible in foreground. House was possibly also owned by J.W. Brubaker (date unknown.) House was "built by City Builders, Inc." according to back of photo. Architect: Commons, E.F., Date Built: 1929"

The sentence 'They are taking good care of the little old Spanish house' is straight out of Laura Ingalls Wilder...

How interesting that is! looks about the size of my house and goodness...look at all that undeveloped land.

Around the same time (1929) my grandparents had their home built from a lot they had purchased. And I too discovered a picture (not of the house) but looking across the street from their front door. USC archives.

this is who we sold it to. I thought you might find that entertaining

You really have to look twice to realize that it's the same house! I love old photos like that.

About the same time my folks were looking for property in Palos Verdes. I haven't been back to my home in Compton in about thirty years. I think it's best that I just remember it the old way. - Margy

So nice to see these two pictures, different moments. The house is adorable, I love that vase in the window and the beautiful (huge) tree there.
Have a nice week,
*** I will be a little bit busy from now on because I've enrolled in two different French schools here, one in the morning and another lessons in the evening! I hope not be crazy in the next months! :)

The massive tree at the front of the cozy Spanish Casa shows the passage of time. It has taken a number of years for that tree to attain that size. Has the house been given an historic designation?
