'S' is for Stained-Glass by Susan Hertel (abc Wednesday)

"Love and Care of Animals" stained glass window by Susan Hertel graces the back side (above the enternace) of the former Home Savings & Loan building, now Chase bank. The front of the building is where the restoration of the Millard Sheets mural is taking place. I found the article in LA Times archives announcing the opening of the bank in the early 1970's, with the description of both art pieces but which mentioned only Sheets. From other readings, I knew the window was by Hertel, a long time collaborator of Sheets, but I was still so thrilled to find her signature on the stained-glass piece (under the ewe's leg).

Interesting in that the first thing I thought was that the composition was similar to that of the work of Millard Sheets. I'm glad you put in the close-up. Thats where I start to see the separation between the two artist's in those four lower panels. Timely in that Christo's collaborator wife Jean-Claude died this week. There was a tendency to leave her out of the equation as well.

Sheets had others work for him. (got a link to one of them somewhere) I've come across later work where I could detect the hand of another. Once again...great research on your end.

Sheets was still around in the 70s? I placed him back in the 30's & 40s. Going to have to wiki this.

Here is the LA Times article (no mention of the window as I thought it had):

S & L OFFICE SET TO OPEN
Los Angeles Times, Apr 21, 1974

Construction of a branch office of Home Savings and Loan Assn. at 27319 S. Hawthorne Blvd., Rolling Hills, is scheduled to open about May 1.

The 8,260-square-foot facility, costing $350,000 will replace a small temporary structure now in a corner of the building site. Home Savings has 56 offices.

The entrance to the new branch features a giant glass mosaic inlaid in black granite, depicting 50 horsemen. Millard Sheets of Claremont designed the building and Robert Clements and Associates, Los Angeles, did the engineering and planning.

What a gorgeous window! And for a bank as well (as opposed to a church)...

It's a stunning work of art and your photo of it is beautiful. There is something about light through stained glass, almost like looking at light through translucent jewels.
