Summer Lift - Mammoth Lakes, CA

Summer view of the Little Eagle chair lift at Mammoth Lakes, CA - coming down the Lake Mary road seen here last winter. The tunnel can be a bridge of sorts - Join "Louis La Vache's" Sunday Bridges at SF Bay DP.

Westward Bound (Sunday Bridges)

This is the Gerald Desmond Bridge, connecting Long Beach to Terminal Island, which I sometimes take on my way home from work. For an excellent site with historical info and great old photos of Terminal Island Bridges, click  www.floodgap.com/roadgap/47-103.

Suspension for Sunday Bridges

The largest and most famous local bridge is the Vincent Thomas Suspension Bridge. Here it's seen from near Cabrillo Beach Pier (- February 2010 - )

At Aviation & Rosecrants (Sunday Bridges)

Here are two train bridges, one for the Metro Green Line light rail, over Rosecrants Ave. and Aviation Blvd. in Hawthorne, about 12 miles due north from Palos Verdes. I lived near by when my partents and I first moved to the US, and then when I started working in aviation after college. I remember the other (proper) train bridge as being the first one I saw in the New World.

Borrowing from Seattle for Sunday Bridge Series

Palos Verdes has many pretty sights but very few bridges. So I've scanned my archives for this aerial view of the Ballard Railway bridge in Seattle. Check out Chuck's wonderful photo and caption of the same bridge at Almost One a Day Seattle. I made a quick visit to the locks last week.

Redondo Pier (Monochrome Weekend & sort-of-Sunday Bridges)

A bit of a stretch for Sunday Bridges but the pier is a semi-circular type and connects the shore with the shore. Weekday afternoons (when this was taken) are not very busy but the weekends are. Wikipedia has a good historical perspective on this pier, which has been rebuilt many times due to storm and fire damage.

1st Avenue Bridge - Barstow, CA (SUNDAY BRIDGE)

My contribution to «Louis» of San Francisco Bay DP's Sunday Bridge Series.Heading north from Main St. on 1st Avenue, we crossed the bridge over the BNSF rail yards to reach the Harvey House (see yesterday's post).
I do recommend walking over the bridge to get to the old train depot. I'm hoping to start a "slow sightseeing" trend, sort of like the "slow food" - it especially works if stranded without a vehicle :).

Orange you glad for the SUNDAY BRIDGE series?

Our talented and funny blogger friend «Louis» of San Francisco Bay DP has launched the Sunday Bridge Series starting today!

My subtle contribution to the meme is the little bitty view of Vincent Thomas bridge, along with the jumble of cranes from the Port of Los Angeles, that can be seen from Western Avenue just south of PV Drive North. The 'empty' stretch of land is the "Defense Fuel Supply Depot which occupies most of the large parcel of land stretching from North Gaffey Street to Western Avenue, adjacent to the Ponte Vista Property and the LAPD Pistol Range" in San Perdro (ref. NORTHWEST ADVOCATE, the Newsletter of the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council - Autumn 2009).
