Students' Study of Stuffed Raindeer...

...during the last drawing class, held last Monday evening, at the PV Art Center. We all plan to take the next session. Our teacher, the painter Hiroko Momii is excellent. She is having an "open house" sale of her paintings this weekend in San Pedro (send me an e-mail if you are interested in going.)

He has already sold his "monster" head. He also told me he won 3rd place in an LA art contest, also as the youngest entrant.

Wave Clouds at Crystalaire

After boasting about all that fine weather, we had rain in LA basin today. But my husband and son went to the soaring field (Crystalaire by Pearblossom) on the north side of the San Gabriels. This very cool photo of a wave cloud was taken by my husband.

"R" is for Rock (abc Wednesday)

The busiest approach to Palos Verdes is Hawthorne Blvd, coming from Torrance, and what I call "PV Rock" - the hill in the photo - towers over the street as it starts the climb up the hill. I took the photo in 2008 from the back seat of a Cessna 172 upon leaving Torrance Airport with my son and his flight instructor.

Need for Speed ...

... brought to you by the South Bay Harley Davidson club, a "hog" zipping by on Hawthorne Blvd.

The computer game of the same name was the first one my son got hooked on when he was 5 years old. I would play endless games against him and I'd ALWAYS lose. I know he doesn't have the "need for speed" now, since his car will be a '68 Karman Ghia when he gets his lisence in less than a month.

Drive-way with a View (in Miraleste)

The Miraleste area of Palos Verdes is one of the 4 original develpments on the peninsula. This region, overlooking the LA Harbor, has some splendid old homes and multi-million dollar views all around.

The historic Malaga Cove Library, Palos Verdes Estates, CA

Today, at the main library is the "Art at Our Library" Opening Reception from 5 to 7 pm, where you can "meet and greet the artists at the 7th annual art exhibition at Peninsula Center Library. Opening reception features entertainment and refreshments and is open to the public. The art will be on display November 13 through December 31."

Formation Overhead!

I heard them coming and rushed out the back door to snap this photo of vintage WWII airplanes, flying over our neighborhood in Rancho Palos Verdes.

"Spirit of America" over the Plush Pony... (SkyWatch Friday)

A combo of old and new, grounded and aloft, alive and animated. 

"Spirit of America" is the name of the Good Year blimp which is based in Carson, CA.

The sign is for the Palos Verdes Inn which used to be The Plush Pony in the 50's and 60's. It is not located in Palos Verdes but just adjacent to it in Redondo Beach.

The old style antennas are becoming obsolete, but the ubiquitous pigeons are going strong in the area.

Since I am breaking the 1st rule of City Daily Photo, I might as well break more so as to show the beauty of the Quarts Mountain resort in middle of Oklahoma. I was lucky to be able to stay and hike around the resort during last August's business trip to Altus Air Force Base.

Spanish Style Classic

This house has preserved the original and elegant Spanish style of the 1920s and 1930s arthitecture within Palos Verdes Estates.

Classy details on the old General Store in Malaga Cove Plaza. It's mate is on to opposite side of the octagonal 2-story tower, designed by the famous local architect Walter Swindell Davis.

A Bum Deal (SkyWatch Friday)

Everytime I go by the Malaga Cove Plaza, I cannot help but take a few snaps of  Neptune (a regular subject for PVDP) - this one was taken last weekend. I thought I'd join Yankee-in-Belgrade's buns in the sky for this week's SkyWatch Friday.

The setting reminded me of an Audubon print, with a cottontail as a bonus.

'P' is for Parasols (abc Wednesday)

On the grounds of The Getty Center in West LA. It's very hot here which is actually not unusual for this time of year. I remember playing hookie from classes during my first year of college, and going to Santa Monica beach for a day on Nov. 8th, 1976.

I Can See for Miles - PV from The Getty Center

I had an hour to spare today between appointments in Westwood and spent it rushing around the marvellous Getty Center. Makes me wonder why I don't visit it more often. LA is having another heat wave with some smog being pushed out toward the ocean by the warm Santa Ana winds. In the distance, the Palos Verdes peninsula is the darker hill on the right left, and farther left right is Catalina Island. (Thank you Petrea & Bratcat for knowing the peninsula vs. island. :)

The Getty was built using Italian travetine with the facades alternating between the rough natural look and smooth polished surfaces.

November Theme Day: Public Transportation

At first, I was going to post a blank page...as everyone knows, public transportation is an oxymoron for the LA area. But we do have regular bus service linking PV to the LA basin, and my son used it once in a while to get to Torrance or friend's house in PV. The 344 goes to Artesia Transit Center, a hub for other destinations such as Downtown LA.

I took the photo thru the windshield of my private transportation, a very reliable 10-year-old, 210,000 miles on the odometer, Honda Accord.
