"K" is for Keramik ... Bauer Pottery Co. of Los Angeles

I often drive by treasure of an antique/junk store, Antique Effects, located in Lomita (2050 Pacific Coast Hwy), and the bright colors of Bauer Pottery always catch my eye. Every once in a while I go in. The store is packed and a mess for most part but the ceramics are very nicely organized. Just last week, I found a creamer of the original numbered Spode Gainsborough earthenware for only $24 (the set my husband had before we were married.) I did not buy any of the Bauer dishes but there is always the next time.

Night Landing

"Look Ma, no lights"
Ian landing at Torrance airport on Sunday evening. They had to come down in altitude that evening because the air was over 100 degrees and needed to keep the engine from overheating.

Getting Our Phil ... (Weekend Reflections)

LA Metro Bus with "Phil" advertising, going down Hathorne Blvd.
... LA Phil or Dr. Phil --- which would you pick? The new 29-year-old music director Gustavo Dudamel (born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela) seems very dynamic and must be fun to watch, as well as being an excellent conductor.

Inside the courtyard of TWENTY - FOVR - THIRTY - THREE

Garden Apartments, 1937
Attributed to Pierpont Davis
Update:  Designed, owned and built by Robert Williams
2433 Via Campesina
"A 1930s 1950s Spanish Revival complex, including a picturesque minaret."
(Ref. An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles by Robert Winter and David Gebhard - a must have for anyone interested in the subject, available on Amazon for only $16.49!)

One of the four(?) graces which
adorn the courtyard - definitely
one of the prettiest on the peninsula.

Update:  Seems that Mr. Winter, Mr. Gebhard and I got it all wrong. Here is what a current resident of the building, NMB wrote to me: "Hi Tash, I live in this building and you have quite a few facts wrong. First of all, 2433 Via Campesina, was design, owned and built by Robert Williams. His daughter is the current owner -- her name is Antonia Williams Graeber. Bob Williams designed many great looking homes on the peninsula. This building was actually built in the late 1950's although it appears much older due to Bob William's dedication to the authentic Spanish Revival style. Your error is somewhat forgivable as this work has been erroneously attributed to Davis in several publications. Mr. Williams would not be happy! This was his life long project, pride and joy. NMB"  Thank you very much for the correction, NMB.

State of the State

Abandoned doll house, Goodwill Store, Torrance
The headlines today stated that the recession ended in June of 2009!
Really??
Not so, according to the local housing market.

The Little Spanish House

This is the first house my in-laws lived in. They bought it in 1946, when Palos Verdes was way in the boonies and when homes were affordable for a young couple starting a family with one income (in addition to the mansions for the wealthy.) The house was sold when my husband was two, and the family moved next door into a much larger home they had build. I noticed that a family with young children lives there now. They are taking good care of the little old Spanish house.

Bowers Residence, 4017 Via Largavist, Valmonte, PV Estates, 1931 (Curtesy of Palos Verdes Library - Local History)
You can imagine my delight when I found a photo of the house in the PV Library Local History photo collection. The description is as follows: "Image shows view of the Edward K. and Stella Bowers residence, located on Via Largavista on lot 16, block 6311, tract 7143, in Valmonte. View shows front of the single-story, five-room stucco house with chimney and tile roof. Lush landscaping visible in foreground. House was possibly also owned by J.W. Brubaker (date unknown.) House was "built by City Builders, Inc." according to back of photo. Architect: Commons, E.F., Date Built: 1929"

Remembering 9/11

Inside St. Paul's, October 2008
The visit to St. Paul's in October 2008 had me sobbing with feeling of loss when I saw the makeshift altar with the photos of the innocent victims of 9/11. I did not photograph it. But I remember them.

At Angel's Gate (Redux) -- Weekend Reflection

I never get enough of this view of the Angel's Gate lighthouse, which has marked the entrance to the Port of Los Angeles since 1913. This was taken last Monday morning, around 8 in the morning, from the Catalina Express catamaran.

Inside St. Catherine of Alexandria Church on Santa Catalina Island

Santa Catalina de Alejandria 28.XI.1602

"The first European to set foot on the island was Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, sailing for Spain. On October 7, 1542, he claimed the island for Spain and christened it San Salvador after his ship (Catalina has also been identified as one of the many possible burial sites for Cabrillo). Over half a century later, another Spanish explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, rediscovered the island on the eve of Saint Catherine's day (November 24) in 1602. Vizcaino renamed the island in the saint's honor." [Ref. Wikipedia]

The beauty and tranquility inside the church is in large part due to the stained glass windows -- bringing the outside scenes, especially those of the nearby ocean, indoors.

Import/Export (PVDP on Vacation)

On Ivo Zaninovic street in Šibenik, Croatia
Not much of a photo, but it's full of symbolism. N. (our travelling companion and my close friend's daughter), was born in Croatia and came to California when she was 5 months old (export/import). We have a red Jeep Cherokee just like the one in the photo (import/export), and N. owns a white one... My son and I came to see the street that has my surname - my father's paternal relatives were all from this neighborhood.
On Sept. 7th, I will have been a US import for 40 years. I feel I have the best of both worlds.

Kettle Corn booth is my favorite stop at the PV Farmer's market held every Sunday morning at the Peninsula Center.
And from this summer's trip, an olive-oil seller at the open air market in Rovinj, Croatia.
