Ugly / Pretty (2 things challenge)

A Bright Spotlight - PV Library 80th Anniversary Gala

The bright tile mural, by Gemma Tacconga and her son Zen Del Rio, is located in the entry to the gallery room in the basement of the historic Malaga Cove Library. It commemorates the Trustees of the library from 1928-1978.

In early February, the PV Library celebrated its 80th anniversary. These five women and many other volunteers made the celebration event and fundraiser a great success.
I'd like to give a special thanks to Fran Wielin (board of trustees President) for including my photos (many of which have been on this blog) in the program (I am published now!), and to both Fran and Kathy Gould (PV Library District Director) for being followers of PV Daily Photo. Kathy's excellent 'director's blog' can be linked to HERE.
Janey Jones (president of the Friends of the Library) is my Miraleste Library Book club buddy and I also wanted to mention my friend Julie Sulman, who brought me into her Neighborhood Book Club, and who is an active supporter of the Friends.

Open House at the Lighthouse

Pt. Vicente Lighthouse holds open house on the 2nd Saturday of the month and the event is worked by the US Navy Sea Cadets. Only the lighthouse and the grounds right by it are open to the public as the location is the residence to US Coast Guard families. The previous photos of the lighthouse can be seen by clicking HERE.

'F' is for Fine Feathered Friends

A hawk (above) and a shiny feathered bird (below) - that's as much as I could figure out. I welcome any help in naming these birds - no, Pat or Mike or Suzy will not cut it.

Girls with Blue & White Umbrellas

As I drove home on Saturday from taking photos of St. Francis, I spotted these darling girls were twirling the umbrellas. I asked if I could take their picture as I drove by and they instantly posed. Then one asked why I wanted their picture. I said it was because they looked so cute - which they certainly did.
This is my NO PRESSURE TUESDAY shot... ;)

This made us laugh today, especially since Talbots is a retailer of "women’s classic clothing".

Panda Express: It's What's For Dinner in PV

If you look beyond the appealing melons, you'll see a long line at the Panda Express Chinese Food counter inside Pavilions market. While it may seem that I'm picking on my fellow PV residents, if I liked Panda Express, I'd be right there in the line with them. So my alternative is to grab the freshly baked rotisserie chicken and a warm loaf of French bread, and along with some quick side dishes, I've got a "cooked" meal for the three of us.

Moss (Wall along Hawthorne Blvd.)

Amy (our dog) and I took a walk last Saturday morning to Hesse Park. We walk good together, she stops to sniff, I to snap. I do think I snapped more than she sniffed though.
I think I like the 2nd photo better, but even after squinting (following
Pasadena Adjacent's
advice from a while back) I could not decide. Which one do you like?
PS - The blue beyond the house is the Pacific Ocean. It was a great day for a walk.

Winter Sports (Mammoth Mountain, CA)

Taking it easy on the chair lift (Eagle Express Chair 15) - which is a bit more exerting than taking it easy on the armchair watching the Winter Olympics. The photos are from the early February of last year, since this year it was too snowy on the slopes.

'D" is for derrière (abc mercredi)

Today, here is a slight pause in the Mammoth photos for this interesting and ample rear view, spotted on the northbound Harbor Freeway.

Aujourd'hui, voici une petite pause dans les photos de Mammoth pour cette vue arrière intéressante et ample, repéré sur l'autoroute Harbor en direction nord. (Please excuse any errors in the translation...I rely heavily on Google Translate.)

While Away from Home: Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg Cathedral, September 2007
Side view with boys, September 2007
In 2007, my co-workers and I stopped ever so briefly to just stand by the cathedral. And even thought this was my second visit there and a much shorter one, it left me with a deeper impression.
The teen boys who just came out of the adjacent school, seemed just like their PV counterparts.

While Away from Home: Obernai, France

Obernai, France - Sept. 2007
No, I'm not travelling in France. It's only wishful thinking. We are away for a ski weekend at Mammoth which is very nice in itself. While away, I thought I'd share a couple of favorites from a 2007 whirlwind business trip in Europe.

I adored everything about Obernai - Le Parc Hotel, the streets, the buildings, the tower, and the cathedral. The photo above was taken during an early morning walk - what a delight!

'C' is for Country Squire

Country Squire "Woodie" at Peninsula Center - January 2010

A beautiful vintage (1950, I think) Ford "Woodie" Station Wagon, with real WOOD. A quick look on the Net, revealed that a "Woodie" in this mint condition is worth over $130,000. Now my look is as surprised as that of the dirver.

Every Intersection on Hawthorne Blvd (in PV) - #1

Intersection of Hawthorne Blvd. & Ridgegate Dr., looking North (14 December 2008)

About the same time I took this photo, the talented artist of Pasadena Adjacent talked about a friend's, Kim Abeles, art piece that is reminiscent of Ruscha's work described below. While it may not qualify as art, I also wanted to do a Palos Verdes take on Ruscha - photographing intersections along Hawthorne Boulevard, the main artery in & out of Palos Verdes.

"For Edward Ruscha's Every Building on the Sunset Strip (Los Angeles, 1966), Ruscha mounted a motorized Nikon to the back of a pick-up truck and photographed every building he passed. The resulting book, with the pictures printed in order and labeled with their street numbers, achieved an effective non-judgemental and almost anthropological record of previously unexplored details and aspects of the urban experience."
