'K' is for Kelly's Korner (ABC Wednesday)

Rolling Hills Est. is horse country, and here you can pull up your ride - motorized or equine - & have a submarine sandwich.

Today I met Mr. Kelly & son - who are the friendly proprietors of the best sandwich place on the hill.

Food for Thought ... with Seagull

The white spec on top is what caught my eye when driving by. The gull had a real "birds-eye view" of the streets and the ocean a few blocks away.

The building, located in Redondo Beach on PV Blvd & Pacific Coast Hwy, had many different uses over the years. In the early '80s, it was a dance club called Annabelle's.

It currently houses an upscale grocery store, Bristol Farms, that opened here in 2000. I appreciate the daily tasting offerings of cheese cubes accompanied by spreads such as Dalmatian fig jam. Of course, the marketing strategy works on me every time.

Isn't it interesting how "Bristol" is a popular name for hotels & stores all over the world? I grew up across from Hotel Bristol in Tuzla, Bosnia. I think the word itself gives a feeling of brilliance and glamor.

Same may be true of Annabelle's for clubs - promise of excitement & fun?

Do you have a Bristol or an Annabelle's close by?

The BIG Five-Oh!

This past week, I turned 50. Nifty-fifty. Half a century. Even with all the jokes, I like being 50. It's a good solid number.
My family, my old-time friends and my friends at work made me feel very special.

I figure that now I can also claim my own label.

The top photo is in the foyer of the Peninsula Center Library, and the label was swiped from a sticker of Alsace-Lorraine Bakery in Long Beach.

"Back to School Night" Sunset (Sky Watch Friday)

Taken at Ridgecrest Intermediate. Tonight parents had a chance to follow their child's class schedule & spend 10 minutes with each teacher to hear about the curriculum. The kids are very fortunate to have such good and enthusiastic educators. I'm amazed at how well organized and prepared the teachers are.
I had to include the fuzzy snapshot is of Mr. Corwin, the school principal. He is well liked by the students and is an excellent adminstrator, and very much a Southern Californian.
Visit the Sky Watch Friday Home Page and see the other participants from around the globe.

Outside & Inside - Malaga Cove Library

The oldest of the three libraries in Palos Verdes, and the most charming.

The children's section is especially fun and inviting.

'J' is for ... 'Jack is Back' (ABC Wednesday)

In keeping with my unintentional car theme week, here is Jack in the drive-thru line.

Jack's car was right around the corner. (Actually a very nice man let me take a picture of his car. In the background is City of Long Beach & LA Harbor.)

The Jack-in-the-Box fast food is open again after a complete remodel. I wish I got a picture of the gutted original building with a sign "NOT OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION".

Driving Home

Saturday afternoon drive home on Palos Verdes Blvd in Redondo Beach. PV in the distance but the coastal fog drifting in along the blue sky is what caught my eye.

2008 PV Concours d’Elegance

Sunday was a picture perfect day in PV. After a walk in the morning, I did make it to the car show at Trump's National. The cars were sparkling as much as the water.

Catalina Island is faintly visible on the horizon.

Mighty (très élégante) "Mini"

A very fancy car show will take place today at the very fancy golf course. Our next door neighbor is a car buff and told me that PV is trying to match the elegance of the Pebble Beach event.

"Palos Verdes, CA: The 16th annual PALOS VERDES CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE will be held at Trump National Golf Club on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California September 19-21, 2008."
........................
Personally, I think Minis are engineering marvels. This "chico" car was parked on Chico St in Malaga Cove neighborhood.

Sunset (Sky Watch Friday)

We had dinner with family at our favorite restaurant at end of Hawthorne Blvd and watched the sunset.

Although it may not seem like it, the photo is in color. The post was inspired by Louis la Vache's color photo.

At Malaga Cove Plaza - Among the Cars

Walking & talking

Dog walking in style

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I realized that the impression PVDP must leave is that there are no people to be seen on the streets, at the mall, in the parks. Well, people are around, but most often I see them in their cars, driving to or from somewhere -- after all, this is LA County.

Elwood Nursery

A wonderful, small, family-owned nursery on Silver Spur Road in Rolling Hills Estates. Our patio is full of geraniums, bouganvillias, impatients, and others that we bought there.

Camera Critters Sunday

Ming the Merciless asked a while back, "What kind of bag do you carry?" --------------------------------------------------------------------
My question is: "What's in your Bag?"
Whiskers jumped into mine when it was empty. Usually it's packed with folders, books, camera, pens, notepads, misc. little bags, water bottle...

Quilting for Vets

Many very talented & creative ladies met at Luella's Quilt Basket store in Redondo Beach for an afternoon of sewing & quilting with the Quilt Club.
This quilt was made by a special lady who is donating it for a veteran. Quilts for Valor in Long Beach, CA is another organization that provides many comforting quilts with the help of many volunteers.

Saturday Morning at the Mall

PV Mall is a pleasant, uncrowded place to hang out & shop - the only crowded time is on Friday evenings when it gets taken over by the younger teen set.

But for now it's awaiting customers...

At Admiral Risty's

Our favorite restaurant - for their steak & seafood and for the great views of the ocean/sunsets. My favorites are the flank steak & seafood brochette, mixed salad with their special French dressing.
The proprietors Wayne (right) & Tim (left) greet the guests every evening and were kind enough to pose for me.

Golden Time

Golden Time by Terry Allen (1995). Sony Picture Studios (formerly MGM), Culver City, CA.
"Located near the roof line of one of the buildings along Culver Blvd., Golden Time depicts a man struggling to balance a clock on his shoulders. This sculpture is a metaphor for the dignity of the working man and the burden we all share against time." (source
http://www.culvercity.org/cultural/pdf/PublicArt_WalkingTour_Downtown.pdf)

My dad and his wife lived in Culver City for many, many years. The time passed too quickly.

Thank you for your faithful visits and for your condolences. They mean a lot to me. I will be visiting back soon.

September Theme Day: Sister City - Obernai, France

View from Le Parc hotel, spa & restaurant.
I had free-choice on this theme, so I selected a charming town I visited briefly last September & fell in love with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obernai
